Conversation 1 Even in the gentlest breeze Conversation explores the grace in motion which can be achieved when opposing elements are counterbalanced and then made to move. Illustration shows the sculpture installed at Inverewe Gardens (Scottish National Trust). Other colours and shapes can be substituted for the yellow and red elements shown.
Wind Dancer 1 Wind Dancer's ingenious articulation will describe anything from a waltz to a tarantella, depending on the will of the wind. Shown above is the prototype for a sculpture I will be exhibiting in the garden of Mellerstain House (Scottish Borders) this summer 2009, courtesy of The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.

Striking Clock 1 This kinetic plays with the inter-relation of elements as they rotate, here using a robust quartz clock movement as the moving force. The advantage is that this sculpture will also tell the time, and marks its passing by striking the bell at the top of the hour. The brass pointer serves as the minute hand and the copper rectangle marks the hour ( here 11 o'clock ). Patinated brass and copper, 200mm ( 8" ) high.
Striking Clock 2 (Baroque) A progression from clock 1, this is more informal and is constructed from heat-treated perspex to 'buckle' the elements. Background colour here is dark brown; the yellow pointer tells the minutes and the pink rectangle marks the hour ( here 2 o'clock ). The bell has just struck. Satin finish perspex, 250mm(10")high.

Mobile 1 A perennial favourite and endlessly absorbing as an exercise in balancing opposing elements. Mobile 1 is made from perspex, on stainless steel and aluminium supports.
During 2009 I will be making more mobiles in different styles - look out for their appearance on these pages...

Paths to Enlightenment This is the seventh in a series of kinetics instigated by an invitation to exhibit in a show promoted by the National Museum of Scotland. Standing 650mm (26") high, the sculpture is driven by a mains electric motor through a reduction gearbox to produce a calm, planetary motion.
Email me if you would like to discuss a commission. Previous sculptures in this series sold for £2,500.
