CONSTRUCTIVISM IN THE ROUND I like to think my kinetic sculptures tread the line between art and engineering, exploring the long tradition of form-through-motion by combining movement and machinery with, I hope, a measure of precision and humour. ‘Kinetic – an assemblage or sculpture, made up of parts designed to be set in motion by an internal mechanism or an external force.’ Working in stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper and perspex, I construct a sculpture from individual elements rather than carve or cast it. The scale of my work varies. Smaller pieces such as the clocks are made on the workbench using the simplest hand tools and joined together by silver soldering. Larger pieces -- such as the wind-driven kinetics -- necessitate more machining and are usually assembled by drilling, tapping and bolting. Born in Birmingham, England, I trained as civil engineer before developing my involvement in sculpture when my career brought me to Scotland 30 years ago. I am a Professional Member of the Society of Scottish Artists, SSA, and Visual Arts Scotland, VAS. I exhibit widely throughout the UK, from The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh to Contemporary Applied Arts in London and to Godfrey & Watt in Harrogate. I have participated in group shows in the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh and Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art. I am prepared to work to commission. |
